Advertisement Graphic (1993)
This advertisement is actually for TDK cassette tape, an image of which appears on the facing page to this ad (not reproduced here). Also on the facing page is a continuation of the slogan "As serious as you can get." This graphic, however, suggests the spiritual relationship of music to the listener, and that headphones are the means of achieving this intimacy. The relationship has a definite sensuality - as evidenced by the glorification of naked male form and further highlighted by the strategic placement of the slogan over the mid-region of the body. The monochrome coloring of the piece conveys a seriousness of tone and visually is reminscent of the solemness of an Old Master painting. The figure has his arms outstretched in a cross in individual and spirtual expression. Neither the headphones nor the tape deck at the bottom of the page are very prominent in this image, not only because the advertised product appears on the facing page, but also because it is the individual's transformation in merging with music that is the true subject of this image.
